CAREER

Mixed race (British/Zimbabwean), dual-nationality (British/USA) and bi-lingual (English/Welsh), Sean Fletcher is a journalist who represents modern Britain, combining a nose for a good story, with an engaging warmth on camera and a down-to-earth nature. His multicultural background means he can reach out to a wide range of audiences.

After initially training as a music producer, Sean began his journalism career in Cardiff, working for BBC Radio Wales. He then moved to London to work for Radio 5 Live. Moving to the television, Sean has worked for BBC 2W, BBC Wales Today, BBC News and ITV.

He began as a sports correspondent for the BBC, Sky Sports News and for Good Morning Britain, before becoming a relief news presenter for BBC Breakfast.

His presenting credits have since varied from BBC’s Panorama (2018) and London’s Inside Out (2019), ITV’s This Morning (2019), to broadcasting from national events including the First World War Armistice Centenary celebrations, the MOBO Awards, the Lord Mayor’s Show and the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry. Thanks to his sporting background, he has fronted events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, rugby Six Nations Championships, Wimbledon, the Grand National, the London Olympics, the 2015 rugby world cup, the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Tour de France.

Sean has also fronted a number of TV documentaries including Panorama: Kids in Crisis (2018), Food Detectives (2016) alongside chef Tom Kerridge and scientist Alice Roberts, Wonders of the Coast Path (2020), Wonders of the Borders (2022) and Britain’s Secret War Babies (2022). He has also fronted series on the abolition of the slave trade, cash-strapped mental health services and the impact of Britain’s growing mixed race population.

Sean is a popular guest on celebrity game shows such as All Star Mr & Mrs (2016), Mastermind (2018), Catchphrase (2020), Richard Osman’s House of Games (2021), Pointless (2022) and The Weakest Link (2022).

DIVERSITY

Sean was born in New York, so the racial tensions in the USA are of particular interest to him. He connected his American past with a civil rights landmark when he got Loving vs Virginia (2007) commissioned by the BBC. The documentary explored a largely unknown story of an ordinary couple who ended the racist law which banned mixed race marriages in American in the 1960s. It was so well received, it was shortlisted for the BBC World Best Documentary of the Year award.

CHARITY

After his son Reuben was diagnosed with OCD, Sean started working with the Orchard OCD – a charity exploring new OCD treatments – and mental health charity YoungMinds.

“I feel passionate about raising awareness of OCD, for those who have it and those who don’t, with a particular interest in helping parents and young people, and lobbying Government to improve funding for youth mental health services”.

He has also campaigned for Bowel Cancer UK – winning £30,000 on All Star Mr & Mrs for the charity – Balls to Cancer, Beating Bowel Cancer, Heads Together, for whom he ran the London Marathon in 2017, Mental Health Mates and SoccerAid, playing for the World team in 2016.
