Nick Knowles

Nick Knowles is an award winning writer, TV presenter and musical artist with a career spanning nearly 30 years.

Appearing on many prime time TV programmes, Nick Knowles is most well known for being the main presenter on DIY SOS: The Big Build. This home renovation programme on the BBC has been running for over 20 years and sees local people, traders and family come together to complete home improvements for those in need of help.

Nick started his TV presenting career in 1994 on an ITV programme called Ridge Riders, where he toured the ancient trackways of the South of England on a variety of different motorbikes.

Since then Nick has appeared in or presented 28 TV programmes, including Real Rescues, Who Dares Wins, Perfection and Break the Safe. He has also written and produced music, as well as written and co-directed a feature film.

In 2018, Nick Knowles was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, where he came sixth. In more recent years he has presented a number of documentaries with a travel theme.

Nick Knowles | TV career

Nick has presented many popular, prime time television programmes, becoming a familiar and well-loved face on the BBC. In addition to his 14 years presenting DIY SOS: The Big Build, he has presented the popular game show Who Dares Wins; Last Choir Standing, a talent show to find the best choir in the UK; Break the Safe, a National Lottery game show.

From 2015-2016 Nick presented 5-Star Family Reunion, a heart-felt quiz where a family and their long-lost overseas relatives worked together, to win a dream reunion in a five-star location.

In April 2019 Nick presented a BBC programme championing local artists called Home is Where The Art Is, in which independent artists pitch to a Mystery Buyer in the hope of winning a coveted commission.

In 2023, Nick presented documentaries Into the Grand Canyon with Nick Knowles and Into Death Valley with Nick Knowles, as well as a further travel programme Amazing Railway Adventures with Nick Knowles.

In 2024 it was announced Nick would be taking part in the 20th anniversary series of BBC show Strictly Come Dancing, where he was partnered with Luba Mushtuk.

In 2016, Nick wrote and co-directed Golden Years, a British action comedy film starring Una Stubbs, Bernard Hill, Phillip Davis and Virginia McKenna. It follows the exploits of a group of pensioners who decide to tour National Trust properties in their caravan and rob nearby banks.

Nick learnt to play the guitar when he was 14 and music has always been a big passion in his life. When he was younger he nearly signed a record deal but chose to concentrate on television presenting, opting rather to play his music privately or sometimes joining his musician brother on stage at his gigs. In 2017, Nick signed with UMC/Universal Music to release his debut album Every Kind of People, a single by the same name and two further singles from the album. His album entered the British album charts at number 92.

Nick Knowles supports a number of charities including: Centrepoint, Rugby4Heroes, Child Bereavement UK, Children’s Air Ambulance, LEWA Wildlife Conservancy, Walking with the Wounded, and The British Citizen Award. Knowles has been a regular supporter of the children’s anti-bullying charity Act Against Bullying. In 2008 he sang, “Addicted to Love” for Children in Need 2008.
