Manchester-born Marnie Swindells started boxing when she was 17 years old as a way of dealing with the grief and anger she felt from losing her father. it was the first time in her life that she felt a sense of freedom and a sense of release.
After one just year of boxing, she packed up and moved to London, where she gravitated towards the only place she knew: a boxing club. Despite often being the only girl in the gym, she was embraced with open arms and immediately felt at home, even if she was hundreds of miles away from Manchester.
Over the next six years, she competed at gold-medal standard, became an award-nominated coach, and even a boxing promoter, giving her a sense of accomplishment and achievement that she never expected to get from boxing. It was even whilst boxing that she met a barrister who inspired her to follow a career in law, and just two years later, she was called to the Bar. And whilst she is now a qualified lawyer, she has returned to the sport she loves the most.
What started as a way of releasing tension, soon became a skill, and she went on to become a gold-medal winning boxer, and is now the successful owner of Bronx Boxing Club. Bronx was the realisation that boxing clubs are about so much more than just boxing; they are about realising your potential, discovering a range of opportunities (such as becoming a lawyer), and finding a sense of belonging.
Her main focus through expanding her boxing empire is to empower women through sport. With a combined 75,000 followers on social media – across Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok – Marnie aims to connect with the everyday woman; as she says, she is a “normal girl who believes health and fitness is for everyone”.
Her success has seen Marnie appear on televised media for TNT Sports and London Live, and has seen her working with a number of brands and featuring in a wide range of advertisements for companies including Adidas, Freeda, and Sports Direct. She was even involved in an international advertisement campaign for toothpaste brand, Colgate.
Whilst Bronx Boxing Club was set up to inspire and engage with the “everyday” person, the club has seen some of the biggest names in professional boxing enter the ring. It’s a popular destination for fighters including Joe Joyce, Mikeala Mayer, and the legendary Chris Eubank.
Her success in the boardroom and in the boxing ring have made Marnie a popular keynote speaker at business and entrepreneurial events, including at The Business Show, The Communication Technology Expo, and The Business Innovation Expo.
