He is the go-to speaker, consultant and coach for organisations serious about delivering meaningful change in this area. In 2019, Steve was awarded an OBE in the Queens’ Birthday Honours List for services to Mental Health.
Having battled with mental illness himself since his late teens, Steve has repeatedly had to fight for his life. Against the backdrop of psychological abuse from his parents and siblings, Steve has continued to display grit and determination as he overcomes the obstacles and pitfalls that accompany life with a serious mental illness.
Steve Gilbert has been a vocal advocate for improving mental health services, ensuring they are accessible and effective for all individuals, regardless of their background. He has worked to highlight and address the disparities in mental health care experienced by people from minority ethnic communities.
Highly regarded for his deep understanding of the issues, clarity of communication, warmth and relatability and striking candour, Steve has been trusted to both deliver and chair keynote speeches at industry-leading events.
Steve Gilbert grew up in Birmingham with dual ethnicity in what he calls a really poor family. Growing up, he was from one of only a few black families living in a largely white area. Racism was a daily part of Steve’s life. He experienced name calling, experienced people constantly touching his hair, had people following him around shops and was racially profiled by the Police.
It was only when he was older that he realised that other people were having similar experiences.
Mental health challenges have played a profound part in Steve’s life. In his early 20s he experienced long periods of depression and at 24 he attempted to take his own life.
It was after he was arrested in his mid-twenties and then admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act that Steve was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Five years later he was diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following years of abuse from his family. Steve has been on a mission to rebuild his life ever since.
A core thread that has run through Steve’s life is the importance of using his voice. Even as a child he was never afraid to speak up even when there had been an injustice.
Steve quotes John Lewis who walked alongside Martin Luther King Junior: “Speak up, speak out. Get in the way. Get into good trouble, necessary trouble.” Steve takes pride in using his voice, to encourage humanity, their empathy, their capabilities, their courage to think bigger, to feel braver and to activate them to do their part in reducing inequalities.
Steve has made it his life’s work to tackle racism and support organisations and leaders to become Anti Racism organisations. Steve contributes to many projects and organisations, including:
Kooth PLC commissioned Steve to provide support and challenge to the senior management team on issues of racial equity and justice and to chair the organisation’s Diversity and Inclusion Council.
Steve co-chairs the innovative NHS Race & Health Observatory’s Mental Health Working Group, investing in research to transform the mental health experiences of Black and historically racialised people.
Steve has been involved in the development of the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework. He harnessed his personal, familial and community experiences of using mental health services, alongside his frustrations of working with NHS organisations, resistant to change.
As one of three Vice-Chairs to the Independent Mental Health Act Review, Steve worked collaboratively with the Department of Health & Social Care, supporting the chair in making recommendations to the Government, with a particular focus on reducing racial inequity.
Steve has served as a non-executive director of the mental health charity Mind and in 2020 was appointed Trustee.
A Suicide Attempt Survivor, Steve spent many months thinking about taking his own life. Recognising the gap in representation from black men with experience of suicide ideation, Steve has collaborated with leading experts to further policy and research into the issue.
