Choosing a Stage / Screen Actor Instead of a Voice Actor for Character Reads – Whats the Benefits

Voice Actor Screen Actors Stage Actors Character Reads Great British Voices

Choosing the right talent is key to the success of your voiceover project. There are so many amazing voice actors out there—some you might not recognise by face but definitely know by their voices. However, is there any benefit in hiring a voice actor with stage or screen experience?

Actors often have a wealth of experience interacting with fellow artists and characters in person, but character reads in voiceover may not require the same type of interaction. It’s essential to determine whether the voiceover artist needs to record in a studio while engaging with other characters in real time or if they can record their parts remotely to be added in post-production.

All actors, whether specialising in voice work or stage/screen, possess strong script interpretation skills and collaborative mindsets. However, hiring a professional with both voice and stage/screen experience may provide added benefits. Such actors often have a heightened ability to convey emotion and adapt to various styles, vital for drama performances, such as audiobooks, animations or videogames. That said, many professional voiceover artists are also highly experienced voice actors who can adeptly handle these with skill, nuance, and ease, making them suitable for a wide range of projects beyond the scope of stage and screen.

A Chat With Sophie B | Great British Voices.

Great British Voices’, Sophie is currently playing Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice at His Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End and is deeply passionate about her voiceover career. She has refined her theatre, television, and film skills with a strong acting foundation from RADA.

When not performing on stage, she dedicates her time to her home studio, producing voiceovers for various projects, including corporate promotions and children’s audiobooks.

However, with her diverse experience across all performance areas, the question arises: Does this make her a more effective voiceover artist?

Sophie believes that her stage experience translates directly into her voiceover work, allowing her to connect deeply with audiences through emotion and storytelling. Her adaptability shines through in her ability to switch between regional accents, which she considers essential for conveying different narratives. She has invested in a professional-grade home studio, ensuring high sound quality and fast turnaround times for her clients. Listen to her voiceover demos below.

Here’s what Sophie had to say about how her experience on stage enhances her voiceover performances:

Working on the West End is a masterclass in storytelling. Every night, I have to embody a character, transport the audience, and connect with their emotions. This same depth translates directly into my voiceover work. Whether I’m narrating a documentary, voicing an explainer video, or creating a character for animation, I bring that same level of commitment to every project. Acting and voiceover are two sides of the same coin – it’s all about connecting with an audience and conveying emotion through voice alone

“My voice has been shaped by years of stage work, but it’s adaptable. Accents are a big part of that versatility. Growing up in the East Midlands, I have a natural affinity for regional accents, which I can switch between seamlessly. Need a smooth RP? A hearty Northern? A bright General American? You’ve got it. Accents and tone are more than just technical skills – they’re pathways into the heart of the story you want to tell.

I understand that in the world of voiceover, sound quality is everything. That’s why I’ve invested in creating a professional-grade home studio. My setup, including the Rode NT1 and Focusrite, always ensures pristine audio. Combined with my editing experience in Audacity, I can deliver high-quality, mastered audio (WAV or any preferred format) within 48 hours, sometimes sooner if you’re on a tight deadline.

The magic of theatre is all about the suspension of disbelief, and it’s no different in voiceover work.  The clarity of sound and the quality of performance can make or break that connection with your audience. I ensure that every recording is delivered with the highest standard of professionalism – you won’t hear any background noise or static, just a clean, dynamic voice that brings your script to life.

Rehearsing has taught me how to collaborate effectively, working closely with directors, castmates, and crew. This same collaborative spirit defines my approach to voiceover. I understand the importance of delivering exactly what you need, and I’m always open to feedback and revisions to ensure the final product is perfect.

As an experienced professional, I also know that time is money. I guarantee a quick turnaround without sacrificing quality. Whether you need a voiceover for a TV commercial, an explainer video, or something as specific as a corporate IVR system, I’m efficient and reliable.

Ultimately, my voiceover work is rooted in storytelling. Every project, no matter how big or small, is about creating a connection – whether that’s inspiring a customer, educating a learner, or bringing a brand to life. Just as I do on stage every night, I aim to captivate and engage, using my voice as a tool to tell your story in the most compelling way possible.

So why hire me? Because you’re not just getting a voice – you’re getting an actor who understands the nuances of storytelling, a professional who delivers impeccable sound quality, and a collaborator who is committed to your vision. Let’s create something incredible together.

Until then, I’ll be here, balancing life on stage and behind the mic, continuing to bring stories to life, one line at a time.

See you in the booth!
