Tammy Beaumont fell in love with cricket at an early age after watching her older brother play. She quickly picked up a bat and honed her skills, with her talent evident from a young age. However, as a child, Tammy suffered from food allergies that affected her growth, leading to her initial exclusion from Kent’s Under-11 cricket team.
Her mum encouraged her to take up gymnastics to help strengthen her body, and her dedication quickly paid off. She not only improved physically but went on to become a National Schools Gymnastics Champion. This achievement laid the foundation for her future success in cricket.
She made her debut for Kent debut in May 2007 at age 16, leading to selection in the Super 4s, which then was a bridge to international cricket. By August, she was off to the Netherlands on an England development tour.
She made her international debut in 2009 at 18, representing England in a Twenty20 match against the West Indies. Despite a modest start, her determination to improve and adapt saw her work tirelessly on her technique.
Following a few years of fluctuating form, Tammy’s breakthrough came in 2016 when she was promoted to open the batting in England’s One Day International (ODI) setup. In a transformative year, she scored 342 runs in three consecutive ODIs against Pakistan, including two centuries. Her performances solidified her place in the team and showcased her ability to score big runs consistently.
The 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup proved to be Tammy’s career-defining tournament. Her 410 runs at an average of 45.55 were instrumental in England’s title-winning campaign, where they defeated India in a thrilling final at Lord’s.
Tammy’s powerful 148-run partnership with Sarah Taylor against South Africa remains one of the tournament’s highlights. For her stellar performances, Tammy was awarded the ICC Women’s Player of the Year in 2017, further cementing her reputation as one of the best in the world.
