Born in 1960 in Jamaica, Linford Christie moved to London at the age of seven. Growing up in a working-class neighbourhood, Christie discovered his love for athletics at school but didn’t take it seriously until his late teens. It wasn’t until his early 20s, under the mentorship of coach Ron Roddan, that Christie began to show the potential that would eventually make him a household name.

His breakthrough came in the 1986 European Championships, where he won gold in the 100 meters. This victory marked the beginning of an illustrious career that saw Christie dominate sprinting during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

• World Championships Gold: In 1993, he claimed gold in the 100 meters at the World Championships in Stuttgart, solidifying his status as the fastest man in the world.
• European Championships: Christie dominated the European Championships, winning three consecutive 100-meter titles (1986, 1990, 1994), a record in the event.
• Commonwealth Games: He also secured gold in the 100 meters at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, demonstrating his versatility and dominance.
• 100 m Record Holder: He was the British record-holder for nearly 30 years at 100 m, with 9.87s.

Linford’s achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1990 and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998.

In 1993, the West London Stadium, where he spent much time training, was renamed the Linford Christie Stadium in his honour.

Linford Christie | TV & Media Career

Following his retirement from athletics, Linford worked as a presenter on the BBC programmes Record Breakers and Garden Invaders and also had a contract with BBC Sport.  In 1990, he made his acting debut in the BBC programme Grange Hill. Later, he appeared in another BBC programme, Hustle. In 2010, Christie appeared on the UK ITV television channel’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! show, subsequently becoming the sixth person to be eliminated.

In November 2023, he appeared in The Masked Singer: I’m a Celebrity Special as Huntsman. He was voted off first.

A documentary film about his life, titled Linford, premiered on BBC One in July 2024.
