What is Cybersecurity Awareness Month?

Cybersecurity Awareness Month runs every year from October 1st to October 31st and aims to raise awareness about cybersecurity and the prevention of cybercrimes.

Running since  2012 in  UK and Europe, its focus  is on the most critical steps to keep yourself cyber secure, including:

• Creating strong passwords
• Using multi-factor authentication
• Backing up data
• Spotting scam emails
• Updating hardware and software

As well as promoting various cybersecurity careers such as engineering, cryptography, penetration testing and many others, it is also a chance to explore how cybersecurity is vital for large, medium and small businesses, as the effect of an attack, can be very costly.

• In 2022, over 39% of UK businesses identified a cyber attack
• 31% of companies estimate they are attached at least once a week
• The estimated cost of cyberattacks in 2022 was £4,200
• The average price of cyberattacks on medium and large businesses is £19,400
• It’s estimated that globally, cybercrimes will cost upwards of £9.2 trillion or $10.5 trillion by 2025
