Alex Atherton is a Leadership Coach and expert on Generation Z who works with senior leaders to help improve recruitment, retention, and engagement of this generation of young people in the workplace.
Drawing on his long career as a headteacher, he also supports organisations in thinking differently about Generation Z and managing their development as multi-generational institutions.
By 2025, Gen Z will make up 25% of the workforce, yet many older people in leadership positions do not understand this generation. Alex presents the challenges for leaders and organisations but also the actions needed to not only overcome these challenges but ensure future prosperity.
Alex’s down-to-earth talks make his audiences laugh and wince, yet feel empowered with the practical actions they take away to implement.
Alex is currently working on his book, The Snowflake Myth, due for publication in 2025.
Prompted by hearing the term ‘snowflake’ once too often about his former students, Alex Atherton decided his own generation needed a better understanding of the young people they were talking about.
Generation Z adult life started in difficult economic circumstances and when it came to the pandemic they were the first to get laid off. Their experiences have led them to be prudent, pragmatic and patient.
Alex helps leaders, employers and organisations understand where Gen Z employees are coming from, and to recognise their many strengths, enabling them to perform at their best and contribute to the wider success of the organisation.
Alex also supports leaders and organisations to acknowledge the elephant in the room: age and generation gaps within the workplace and the issues that these present, such as a communication disconnect. Looking at the issues from a range of angles, Alex demonstrates not only how to overcome them but how to harness them for the good of the organisation.
Understanding Generation Z: This talk is suited for organisations who have managed to recruit the calibre of young staff they require, and keep hold of them, but not yet motivate or get the best out of them. Alex uses his original research to describe the key characteristics of Gen Z, and also the strategies organisations implement so that leaders and their young staff can get the best out of each other.
The Recruitment and Retention of Generation Z: This talk focusses on how organisations can overcome the challenges of finding, and keeping hold of, the best of the young generation in the workplace.
Managing Intergenerationally: This talk deals with how organisations can make the most of the ever-expanding age range in the workplace, which commonly includes four or more generations side by side. Too often this is seen as a barrier to productivity rather than an asset. Alex demonstrates not only how to overcome the challenges faced by having multiple generations in the workplace, but how to use them to move the organisation faster.
Alex also provides a public sector senior leadership talk titled From Frantic to Fulfilled. His clientele of audiences has covered even more industries recently, and now includes pensions, mortgages, manufacturing, funerals, banking, personal finance, and opticians.
Previous clients include: Lean Agile Brighton, Forum Events, JVN, ASSCL, University of Buckingham, SLCC, Welsh Police, Tranquiliti, National Grid, Mayor of London, Elevate.

It was so great to have Alex Atherton deliver a session, all about Gen Z. It’s been a long time since I listened to a talk when I found myself making so many notes. The session was extremely informative and thought-provoking and Alex presents with such passion on a subject area that he is clearly well-informed about. I was that impressed I have asked him to keynote speak at our annual conference.

Very well presented and thought provoking. We could see our audience was engaged and took away the need to make changes whilst working with Gen Z. The feedback has been great! We liked that you stayed to talk to our audience, it also highlighted that people enjoyed the session as they approached you to discuss ideas.
