Whilst studying at University, Alex Beresord took on his first presenting job, hosting Curriculum Bites (2002-2006) on BBC2. The series was a spin-off of BBC Bitesize (1998-) and was aimed at students sitting their GCSEs.
In 2009, Alex Beresford moved to The West Tonight (1970-2009; 2013-) on ITV West Country following the cancellation of ITV West. Here, he presented the weather every weekday evening. In 2012, Alex moved to the ITV Breakfast show Daybreak (2010-2014) in what was originally meant to be a permanent role. However, due to personal reasons, he moved away from the show, appearing as a stand-in when their regular reporter – Laura Tobin – was unable to present. In 2014, Daybreak was replaced by Good Morning Britain, where Alex works alongside Tobin once again. Alex is often seen presenting from location as well as the studio; his most famous location piece came in 2013 when he was flown to America to report on the devastation of a EF5 tornado in Oklahoma. His report was turned into an hour-long programme titled Super Tornado (2013) in which Alex discussed the science behind tornadoes and other such natural disasters.
In 2013, Alex expanded on his weather knowledge by presenting a three-part series for Channel 4 called The World’s Weirdest Weather which saw Alex covering a range of phenomenal weather fronts, and reached up to 1.5 million viewers. This was quickly followed by a four-part Channel 4 series called Britain’s Most Extreme Weather.
Alex Beresford Good Morning Britain
Not only is Alex one of ITV’s go-to weather presenters, he has also sat in the host’s chair and presented the Tonight programme on no less than five occasions, co-presented All Around Britain (2020-2021) alongside Ranvir Singh and Ria Hebden, and became a guest presenter on Good Morning Britain in August 2020. In 2022, Alex left his position at ITV West Country to permanently move to ITV and become their live weather presenter on ITV Evening News (1955-). He has also co-presented ITV series Orkney: Britain’s Green Islands (2021) alongside Julia Bradbury.
Alex Beresford on Knife Crime
Alongside weather reporting, Alex has another passion, one a little closer to home. Following on from his passionate debate on knife crime for Good Morning Britain, and the tragic news of losing his own cousin to knife crime, Alex was asked to present the show Knife Crime and Me (2019) for ITV. It saw Alex travel around the UK from Bristol to London, Glasgow and the West Midlands, to better understand the issue surrounding knife crime and to learn how to solve them. The show was well received and earned Alex a RTS nomination.
Alex Beresford Charity Campaigner
Alongside this, Alex is the patron of the Bristol-based charity Empire Fighting Chance, who use boxing as a means of social change and a way of discussing the increase in knife crime. Alex also runs a diversity school tour project where he visits schools, colleges, young offenders institutes and prisons to talk about careers in the media as well as knife safety. Thanks to his efforts in promoting careers for young black individuals, he was chosen for the national role model programme for young black men by MP Hazel Blears.
His passionate nature about inspiring the next generation meant he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy by the University of Gloucester, and was selected as a National Black Role Model in 2008 by the government’s Reach Role Model Programme.
However, it’s not all seriousness for Alex. He showed off his fun side in the 2018 series of Dancing on Ice (2006-) where he reached the semi-final, before participating in the 20-show arena tour. He has since appeared on Ninja Warrior (2015-2019), James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen (2001-), On Yer Bike! (2021), The Chase (2009-), and the 2022 edition of All Star Musicals (2017-) in which he won, performing a song from Hamilton (2015-) as Alexander Hamilton himself.
