Whilst on Blue Peter, Ayo Akinwolere worked alongside the likes of popular presenters Konnie Huq, Zoe Salmon, Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton. It was whilst on the show he took part in some of their most dangerous challenges including breaking the record for the deepest open water swim when he swam five miles across the Palau Trench in the Pacific Ocean.
Since Blue Peter, Ayo has demonstrated his diversity as a presenter, hosting shows across the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC Sport and others. He has presented shows including Inside Out (2016-2020), Teens From a Small Island (2010), Stammer School (2011), Football Focus (2017-), World of Weird (2016), Children in Need (2016), The Gabby Logan Show (2011-2012), The Great Birmingham 10K, The 100 Greatest Toys (2010), the British Basketball League Season 2017/2018, The Premier League Show (2016), BBC World Cup Nigeria vs Croatia (2018) and Premier League Fanzone. As a celebrity guest, he has appeared on Celebrity Masterchef (2015), Pointless Celebrities (2012-2021), Dancing on Ice (2012), The Great Comic Relief Bake Off (2013) and The Great British Menu.
As a radio host, he has presented BBC Radio 4’s From Our Home Correspondent (2017), BBC World’s It’s a Dog’s Life documentary (2017) and BBC 5 Live’s Weekend Breakfast slot. In 2022, he joined up with Redbull and the Wings For Life Foundation to host the podcast Why I Run, which celebrates the everyday and extraordinary stories of running.
He is comfortable interviewing big stars including Lewis Hamilton, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Daley Thompson, Usain Bolt, Lennox Lewis, Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean. He has presented the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2012 London games, is a regular host for the FA, reported from the London Mini-Marathon and commentated on the South African World Cup. With sport being one of Ayo’s passions, he has also hosted the Autumn Nations 2020, Summer Internationals 2021 Rugby and the 2022 Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games.
He has been nominated at the BAFTAs for Presenter of the Year and Best Factual Programming for his ‘Street Child World Cup’ documentary, as well as hosting their Young Film Critic Awards. He won the the Factual RTS Award and BBC Ruby Award for his documentary on Extremism.
Ayo is a keen traveller having visited over 120 cities worldwide. He is a keen photographer and his photographs have been printed in the children’s National Geographic collection and Vogue Bambini. He won the British Photography Award for Fine Art for his piece entitled ‘Great Britain’ which was a reaction to the changing landscape of global ethnicity. He also writes for the digital magazine The Major, a collective space for innovation, interviews and film.
He also guest lectured on media and broadcasting at Universities across the UK.
