SPORT
Chemmy Alcott received her first set of skis aged 18 months, began racing at aged 3, joined competitive racing at 8, and never looked back. However, her run to the top was not without its challenges, having injured herself and broken over 45 bones in her career, starting with a broken neck at age 12, and including a broken foot, broken ankle, and double fractured right leg.
She started winning medals early in her career, with six gold medals at the Junior British National Alpine Ski Championships and a silver and bronze at the European Youth Winter Olympic Festival. In 2002, she won every title on offer in her final junior championships. In 2005, she was awarded the Sunday Times Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
She made her Olympics debut in Salt Lake City in 2002, appearing in the subsequent three in Turin, Vancouver, and Sochi. Throughout her senior career, she won an astounding 37 gold medals at the Senior British National Alpine Ski Championships, won gold in 5 separate Super G events, gold medals in giant slalom over seven years and slalom over six.
CHARITY
Charity work is very important to Chemmy, and she is an ambassador for several good causes and participates in fundraising activities. She is an ambassador for Right to Play, Ski4Cancer, SnowCamp, and United Learning and raises money for underdeveloped countries to promote sport in education. Her fundraising endeavours always rely on her athleticism; she has participated in the World’s Toughest Ski Race in Greenland, a 100-mile road race in London, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising almost £1,000,000 for charity.
She herself is the founder of the X-Elle Initiative, which was developed to increase girls’ confidence in sports.
MEDIA
Since retiring, Chemmy has become a familiar face on our TV screens, being part of the BBC’s Winter Olympic commentary team, presenting Ski Sunday (2023), and appearing on ESPN, Eurosport, and Sky Sports.
