Dr Amir Khan is a devoted GP and best-selling author working in inner city Bradford. His charisma and expertise won the hearts of the nation following his role in GP’s Behind Closed Doors (2014-) on Channel 5.
He has educational experience too as he has been a Senior Lecturer at both the University of Leeds School of Medicine and the University of Bradford.
He is a high profile campaigner on the benefits of nature and wildlife in health and wellness.
Dr Amir Khan qualified with an honours degree in medicine from the University of Liverpool in 2004, fully qualifying as a GP in 2009. During this time, he completed his Diploma in Child Health and Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, giving him particular expertise in children’s and women’s health. He also holds a Diploma in Diabetes and has specialised in Type 2 Diabetes, minor surgery and joint injections.
Dr Amir Khan is the resident doctor for ITV’s Lorraine (2010-) and Good Morning Britain (2014-), as well as hosting Dr Amir’s Sugar Crash (2021), and You Are What You Eat (2004-2006; 2022) alongside Trisha Goddard.
Other TV credits include hosting The Science of Sleep (2019) with Gaby Roslin, How to Lose a Stone in a Month (2019) with Ruth Langsford, The Great British Urine Test (2020) with Dr Christian Jessen, along with contributing to ITV’s Tonight Show (1999-), BBC Breakfast (2000-), This Morning (1988-) and Sky News (1989-).
In 2020, Amir published The Doctor Will See You Now, which rocketed to the Sunday Times bestsellers list. It tells a heart-warming story of the highs and lows of life as a GP. He also contributes to Gardener’s World magazine, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Grazia, aljazeera.com and Good Housekeeping.
In 2018, Amir was named GP Trainer of the Year by the Royal College of General Practitioners for his efforts in coaching the next generation of GPs. He has also been on the advisory board for the School of Pharmacy and Practice Managers.
Amir is the first ambassador for The National Wildlife Trusts and The Butterfly Conservation Society, working closely with them to ensure access to green spaces for inner-city children and spreading the world on how being outside with nature is good for your health. Amir is also an ambassador for The Good Grief Trust, who support newly bereaved people. His particular role is to advise on bereavement support for those from minority ethnic backgrounds in culturally appropriate ways.
He is a popular figure online, with a social media following of over 192,000 on Twitter and 165,000 on Instagram.
He has appeared at a number of events as a guest speaker including at Pulse LIVE Leeds in 2019 which supports the education and development of grassroots GPs, and the Cx Congress where discussions were had about the most pressing challenges affecting all aspects of vascular disease management.
He is a confident speaker and host, available to talk to audiences of all sizes at industry events, conferences and Q&A sessions. He covers medicine, what it’s like to be a GP, writing and TV work, and is informative, entertaining and captivating.
