Billed as the next David Attenborough, Hamza Yassin is a passionate and highly knowledgeable wildlife photographer, cameraman, ornithologist, conservationist, and presenter.
He has presented wildlife-themed segments for The One Show, Countryfile, This Morning and his own series, Scotland: My Life in the Wild.
Whilst known to wildlife fans, Hamza burst onto the mainstream scene when he won the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing.
Born in Sudan, Hamza Yassin moved to the UK when he was eight years old, settling in Northampton before moving to Kilchoan in Scotland when he was 21. His love for nature and wildlife has been there since his schooling years, gaining a Bachelor of Science in Zoology with Conservation from Bangor University, and then a Master’s Degree in Biological Imaging and Photography from the University of Nottingham, so it’s fair to say he knows his stuff.
Before becoming known for his presenting gigs, Hamza was a wildlife cameraman, working on BBC nature documentaries, as well as Springwatch, Animal Park, Wild Isles (2023), and The Hunt, narrated by the aforementioned Attenborough. He also provided photography and videography services to the Rutland Global BirdFair in recognition of their 25th anniversary in 2013.
Hamza’s first appearance as a presenter was on BBC’s The One Show as one of their new wildlife cameramen. He has since presented the hugely popular CBeebies show Let’s Go For a Walk (2020) as Ranger Hamza, followed up with Ranger Hamza’s Eco Quest (2022).
In 2020, Hamza presented his own Channel 4 documentary, Scotland: My Life in the Wild, which documented his own life in the Scottish Highlands, and the wildlife that share his beautiful, adopted home. He then presented the series Scotland: Escape to the Wilderness (2021), where he guided celebrities, including Martin Clunes, Ben Miller, Baroness Warsi, and Richard Coles, through the Scottish Highlands.
He has combined all of his media experience behind and in front of the camera, and his passion for ornithology into his book, Be a Birder: The Joy of Birdwatching and How to Get Started, published in 2023. The book hit the Amazon bestseller lists ‘Wild Birds’, ‘Earth Sciences’, and ‘Birds’.
In 2023, he became a representative for Dyslexia Scotland having being diagnosed with the condition himself at school.
Hamza’s winning appearance on Strictly Come Dancing (2022) launched him into the stratosphere, and he is now in high demand as a keynote speaker on nature, conservation, and the environment.
