Jo Durie is a former #5 world-ranked tennis player and held the position of British number #1 for 9 years.
She was the winner of 2 Grand Slam Mixed Doubles Titles with her long time partner Jeremy Bates at Wimbledon ’87 and Australia ’91.
She reached the semi-finals of the Roland Garros & US Open in 1983 and quarter-finals ’83 Australian & ’84 Wimbledon beating Zina Garrison, Pam Shriver, Hana Mandlíková, and Tracy Austin.
After a successful junior career, in 1976 Jo turned professional in 1977 played her first match at Wimbledon that year against the eventual champion, Virginia Wade.
Her most successful year at the Wimbledon tournaments came as a singles player 1984 when she reached the quarterfinals, beating a then 15-year-old Steffi Graff in a memorable fourth-round match. She remains one of the few players to have a winning record against Steffi, winning 4 out of 7 head to head matches.
In 1983 her most successful singles year, She won two top-level WTA singles titles at Mahwah, USA, and Sydney, Austrailia. She then had career wins over Steffi Graf, Zina Garrison, Pam Shriver, Hana Mandlíková, and Tracy Austin.
She was ranked the No. 1 British player for most of her career, having won the British National Singles title a record seven times.
Jo was mixed doubles partner alongside fellow British player Jeremy Bates.
They won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 1987, the first British doubles team to win the title for fifty-one years. And in 1991 they became the first British doubles team ever to win the Australian Open mixed doubles title.
Jo went on to win five woman’s doubles titles from eighteen finals during her tennis career.
She also won the British National Doubles title a record nine times.
Since retirement, Jo has worked as an expert TV tennis commentator for both the BBC, BT and British Eurosport.
She also coached British number one Elena Baltacha alongside her own former coach Alan Jones.
Jo Durie is involved as a Coaching consultant to JET academy based at David Lloyd Northwood working with elite juniors.
She also an ambassador for the famous La Manga Club resort, Spain.
