Singing and dancing has been in Matthew Morrison’s life from an early age. During school he was a member of the Buena Park Youth Theatre, the Collaborative Arts Project 21 and the Orange County School of Arts. He then studied at New York University’s Tisch School of Arts, dropping out after two years to star in the Broadway production of Footloose (1998). By the time he was about 18 years old, when his contemporaries were still in education, Matthew was already a regular Broadway performer.
His star began to rise and he took the role of Mr Will Schuester in the highly successful Fox programme Glee, a story about a school choir dealing with social issues including sexuality, race, disability and relationships. It was a role that would gain him a number of award nominations and wins over the years, including wins at the SAG Awards, Satellite Awards and TV Land Awards, and further nominations at the Golden Globes, Teen Choice Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards.
Glee gave him the opportunity to mix his love of acting with his passion for singing, dancing and performing, but he wanted to explore alternative avenues. In 2010 he released his first self-titled album Matthew Morrison which featured the likes of Elton John, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sting, followed by Where It All Began in 2013.
Thanks to the popularity of Glee, Matthew was cast in small appearances and guest roles for many popular television shows, including CSI: Miami (2002-2012), The Greatest Dancer (2019-2020), American Horror Story (2019), The Good Wife (2009-2016), Grey’s Anatomy (2005-) and So You Think You Can Dance (2005-). He also performed at the 2013 UK Lawrence Oliver Awards, and hosted the 2012 PBS special Oscar Hammerstein II – Out of my Dreams. He has dipped his toe into the world of feature films, starring in films such as Music and Lyrics (2007) and What To Expect When You’re Expecting (2012).
Since leaving Glee, Matthew has been making a name for himself in the world of stage, on Broadway and in local and national theatres. He originated the role of Link Larkin in the 2003 production of Hairspray, for which he was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actor; starred in The Light in the Piazza in 2005, for which he was nominated for the same award as Hairspray along with a Drama Desk for Outstanding Actor, broadway.com Award for Favourite Featured Actor, and a Tony Award for Best Actor; Finding Neverland in 2015 for which he won the broadway.com Audience Awards for Best Onstage Pair and Favourite Actor, as well as nominations for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance; he has also starred in The Rocky Horror Show (2000), South Pacific (2008), 8 (2012), Dr Seuss’ The Grinch Musical Live (2020), A Naked Girl on the Appian Way (2005), and 10 Million Miles (2007) – for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor.
