Max Whitlock was first introduced to gymnastics at age seven, going on to join the Sapphire School of Gymnastics. When he was 12, he joined his coach Klemen Bedenik in Slovenia to continue his training, before joining the South Essex gymnastics club upon his return to England.
He first burst onto the competitive gymnastics scene in 2010 where he won three medals at the Commonwealth Games, before making his debut at the World Championships the following year.
He made his mark on the public at the 2012 London Olympics, before making history in 2015 by being the first British man to win gold at a World Championships. He would go on to further success at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he won the first medal for Great Britain in the all-around event for over 100 years, before becoming the first British gold medallist in artistic gymnastics and the pommel horse, winning both within an hour of each other.
In 2017 he became the first British athlete to defend a gymnastics world title; within the next year he would go on to win medals at the Commonwealth, European and World Championships. By the time the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games came along in 2021, he had managed to hold on to his European and World titles, and go on to retain his Olympic Pommel Horse title.
He competed at the 2024 Paris Games – his final Olympics – but was unable to defend his title, coming 4th in the Pommel Horse.
Since becoming one of the most inspirational and impressive athletes in the country, Max and his wife have wanted to give back to the gymnastic community, so they set up the Max Whitlock Gymnastics Club. The club’s aim is to provide quality, productive and fun classes for children and aspiring gymnasts up and down the country.
In 2020, Max released his first book, The Whitlock Workout: Get Fit and Healthy in Minutes, where he shares his own fitness and workout tips, as well as healthy and nutritious recipes. The book was so well received it made it to the top 100 of Amazon’s Gymnastics Books list.
Thanks to his success in the sport, Max was awarded an MBE in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List, which was upgraded to an OBE in 2022.
Through his sport, Max has shown extreme drive and determination to become the best within his field of expertise. Max is now a popular member of the corporate circuit, ideal for audiences looking for business or sport motivation. As a relatable figure for young people, a role model for aspiring athletes and gymnastics and someone with traits desired by those in the business world, Max is ideal for a whole host of events in the search for an effective motivational speaker.
