Richard McCann is a motivational speaker, coach, workshop facilitator and author of three bestselling books that tell his personal story of surviving after extreme adversity.
At the age of just 5, Richard experienced the loss of his mother in horrific circumstances, her death at the hands of serial killer Peter Sutcliffe. After his mother’s murder, he was then brought up by his often drunk and violent father, living on a tough council estate in Leeds, England.
This led to turbulent times in foster care and an unsettled school life, which he left with no qualifications. Richard found himself with no prospects, making mistake after mistake, and landing himself in prison, ironically the same prison as his mother’s killer.
On his release from prison, he hit rock bottom, feeling he had zero prospects and no reason to live; he shared a suicide pact with his sister.
But this was not to be how his story ended. After hitting rock bottom, Richard McCann found it within himself to turn his life around. He learned to take full responsibility for his life, adopt an iCan attitude and embrace his authentic self.
He has since had an 18 year career as a coach and author, has given over 3000 presentations across the world, covering important issues such as resilience, responsibility, determination and change.
Richard McCann’s books have made it on to the Sunday Times Bestseller’s list, with his first selling over half a million copies and being translated into more than 10 different languages.
Richard created the iCan academy, providing presentation skills training, and resilience workshops for various audiences, including corporate and business, schools, housing associations, and prisons. He provides online and in-person training, virtual and live events and works with schools to support schools to empower their children with resilience and motivation.
Richard’s speeches cover a variety of themes including:
In 2005, Richard published his first book Just A Boy: The True Story Of A Stolen Childhood, a heartbreaking but also uplifting story of survival and hope. The book tells of Richard’s,with his two sisters, from one violent home to another, forgotten by all except the media. Without love or support they spiralled away from help or happiness. The book shares how Richard realised no one was going to rescue their lives but him and charts his inspirational transformation. The book tells how the forgotten children of violence suffer, and how they can heal. A heartbreaking, uplifting story of survival and hope.
Following the success of Just A Boy, Richard published his second book The Boy Grows Up: The inspirational story of his journey from broken boy to family man in 2007. This is an account of how Richard used the success of Just A Boy to try and help his sister, and his attempts to make sense of his past while at the same time learning more about the impact of trauma and loss in childhood. He becomes a voluntary counsellor and visits prisons, coming to terms with his traumatic childhood by talking to others and learning about how to accept the past and move on.
The third in the trilogy Just a Man chronicles Richard’s journey, as he is tested repeatedly, until he realises that the spirits of our loved ones are always around us, something he had thought since he lost his mum when he was 5 years old.
Richard has a powerful story to tell but beyond his story, he has a philosophy to share, his iCan philosophy which anyone can embrace. Clients and the audiences who watch him can learn how an iCan attitude can help them take responsibility and how to be inspired to take positive action. His talks help people learn to strengthen their resilience, how to improve their self-talk and gain perspective on whatever it is that life and business throws at them.
“Undoubtedly one of the best courses I have ever been on! I cannot recommend Richard highly enough and I will definitely be working with him again in the future.”

“We had the pleasure of hearing Richard speak at our annual Leadership Conference yesterday, and I couldn’t recommend highly enough! Whilst listening to pretty challenging subject matters, Richard brought humour and fun and really connected with us all in the audience. If you are wanting to find a motivational speaker who can challenge mindsets and encourage people to reframe their thought processes, Richard would be a great place to start. Thank you for an inspiring session!”
