Sara Cox is perhaps best known for her radio work. Cutting her teeth on Radio 1 from 1999, she co-presented the Saturday lunchtime show, then moved into Zoe Ball’s shows as the new host of Radio 1 Breakfast from April 2000. Her tenure on the show saw daily listeners grow from 6.9 million to 7.8 million. She hosted the drivetime slot between 2003 and 2004 before going on maternity leave. Upon her return in 2005, she took on the weekend afternoon show. Over the next ten years, she would continue presenting that show, as well as covering for Jo Whiley, Fearne Cotton, and Chris Moyles on their respective programmes. After covering a variety of shows, Sara decided to leave, and her final show was on 17th February 2014.
Whilst not moving permanently to Radio 2 until the end of 2013, Sara has covered shows since 2011, stepping in for Claudia Winkleman, Ken Bruce, Chris Evans, Simon Mayo and Vanessa Feltz. She bridged her move from radio to television through music, fronting MTV Hot and Born Sloppy, as well as commentating for the 2011 and 2012 Eurovision contests. She also hosted The BRIT Awards Red Carpet and the One Love Manchester concert.
Sara Cox launched her career as a TV presenter as one of the hosts of Channel 4’s Girlie Show (1996-97). Since then, she has hosted popular shows The Great Pottery Throw Down (2015-17), the Back in Time For… series (2018-present), Love in the Countryside (2018-19), Britain’s Favourite Dogs: Top 100 (2018), Between the Covers (2020-present), The Sara Cox Show (2019), and Britain’s Top Takeaways (2022).
She has also participated in some of the country’s most loved topical shows, including Never Mind the Buzzcocks (2013), The Apprentice: You’re Fired (2012-18), Tipping Point (2017), Room 101, Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel (2023), Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (2021), and A League of Their Own (2013-17).
She is a regular contributor to The Sunday Mirror and The Independent, and has published two books, as of 2023. Her memoir Till the Cows Come Home was published in 2018 and became a Sunday Times bestseller. Her debut novel Thrown was released in 2022 and was also a Sunday Times bestseller.
Sara Cox is very passionate about helping others, and uses her public stage to advocate and campaign for a number of charitable causes. In 2009, she joined the 10:10 project hoping to reduce her own carbon footprint, using her childhood lessons of working on a farm to her benefit.
She has helped support the NSPCC, PDSA, Great Ormond Street, Centrepoint, Sport Relief, Comic Relief and Red Nose Day.
