Warren Gatland began his coaching career in 1989 as a player and coach for Taupiri, before joining Connacht in 1996 – leading them to the 1998 European Challenge Cup quarter finals. Between 1998 and 2001, he was the head coach of Ireland, followed by the London Wasps where he led them to win the Challenge Cup in 2003 and the Heineken Cup in 2004.
He returned New Zealand for the 2004/2005 season to coach the Waikato Air New Zealand Cup before returning to the UK in 2007 where he became the coach for the Welsh team. Under his management, they would go on to win three Six Nations Grand Slams and a further Six Nations title. He also guided them to two semi-finals and quarter-finals at World Cup tournaments. He would also go to lead them to the number one position in the world and had been hailed as one of their greatest ever coaches. He stayed with Wales until the 2019 World Cup finished, at which point he became the Director of Rugby at the Waikato Chiefs.
As well as coaching the Wales team, he would be an on-and-off coach for the British and Irish Lions team. He would lead them to a test series victory over Australia in 2013, four wins in non-test games in 2017 alongside a test series win against New Zealand – the first time they had beaten the team in the professional era.
In 2013, he was named UK Coach of the Year at the UK Coaching Awards, whilst the Lions were named BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year. In 2014, he was appointed an OBE for services to rugby, an honour that was promoted to CBE in the 2020 Birthday Honours.
